Business Ethics & Profession

"Karmanyeva adhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana
Ma karmaphalahetur bhurma te sangostvakarmani."
I am sure a lot of astiks would reminise these Bhagvatgita lines often plainly quoted ---- Focus on the karma(deed) and not on the phala(result). However, there was quite some misinterpretation here of the saying in my mind in terms of not concentrating on the result(goal) which most of the time contradicted with our management books on GOALS & RESULTS. Secondly, without expectations (phala) can one do anything perhaps in this world today?!
The right perspective of the Vachana ( saying) was only unfolded when I met up with a learned guru from ISKON [an IIT & IIM!] --He said, Lord Krishna says " One should focus on the deed which definately should be targeted to a result(goal), and its certainly not that one should do actions without expectations". He continued,"An action done without a goal will not yield good results. The action should proceed towards a goal or a cause, and we have complete control over our actions." I had the same question in mind which most of you would have -- then why not seek or have expectations?
Here comes the answer -- Gautam Buddha found out that craving (desire) or expectations are the root cause of sorrow in this world. The lines have just prepared a reader for taking failure head on -- by saying "dont worry about the results" as only ACTIONS can be controlled by one and the RESULTS cannot.
Probably looking at this saying in a wholistic and concrete manner will help understand the true linkage for those fighting between "ethics" & "profession". Yester, I was struck by a question asked by a friend -- Is it ethical to deprive someone off his everyday food, bread and butter in the name of business or profession?! Has professionalism & ethics just given way existence. Where is business ethics in an organisation asking its employees to go for no fault of theirs? With the Jet incident and Indian Airlines to follow has it become a fight between "ethics", "responsibility" and "existence". Is there a way out, if there is one?
I still seek an answer

Really good piece of writeup, bro. I think someone at Jet, must have read this piece, cause they have announced today that they will be taking back "ALL" the fired employees.

Keep writing... :)
